August 1997

Between the devil and the deep blue sea,  presented seven British artists city-wide in Helsinki.  Artists were invited to present works with an emphasis on performance or physical presence as a component. The project combined interventions in public space with gallery based installations, weaving through the annual Helsinki Festival: Beaconsfield ArtWorks (railway square and streets of Helsinki), Stuart Brisley (Atheneum Museum), Robert Ellis (Kluuvi Gallery), Tracey Emin (MUry gallery), Bruce Gilchrist, Hayley Newman (Eslpanade bandstand), Mark Wallinger (Kluuvi Gallery).

RAX, hosted by Beaconsfield in London, 1996, was the first UK exhibition of contemporary Finnish art in the UK, curated in collaboration with the Finnish Artists Association MUry. We were reciprocally hosted the following year by MUry, as part of Helsinki Festival, 1997.
