Ballroom and song are recurring motifs in Golden (Lessons), a research residency that expands on susan pui san lok’s ongoing project, Golden, exploring themes of nostalgia, cultivation and aspiration in diaspora.
Unfolding over four weeks, Lessons is structured within Beaconsfield’s long-established live residency tradition, punctuated by a series of on- and off-site events and interventions. Audiences are welcome to converse with the artist or participate as students and performers of song and dance: be part of an impromptu chorus led by composer Mat Davidson, or improvised ‘lessons’ led by dancer/choreographers Jenevieve Chang and Annie Pui Ling Lok. Previous work from the Golden series – Golden (Vistas), Golden (Years) is exhibited and a new work Golden Hour will be developed for broadcast on Resonance 104.4 FM as Golden (Lessons) draws to a close.
The Golden series includes Golden(Vistas), originally commissioned by Beaconsfield for Lightsilver, 2005.
